The Texas Guinan suite

Who was “Texas” Guinan?

Mary Louise Cecilia “Texas” Guinan, was born in Waco, Texas, in 1884. She was the first female Western movie star and she lived in her character. Texas moved to New York and began her contributing to the legacy of Speakeasy life. She worked at El Fey and made her name by creating a “live bantering routine for her customers.” When she finally got her own club, Texas often incorporated theatre shows and songs/parodies for her customers. “She was arrested in 1927 at the her own 300 Club. While at the police station, she sang the “Prisoner’s Song” before cops, Prohibition agents, and reporters. At trial, she insisted she was only a hostess and a jury found her not guilty.”
